Music Inspires and Heals

Music inspires and heals. I think we all are aware of this fact. The famous author, Leo Tolstoy, said this much better than I ever could: “Music is the shorthand of emotions.”

Music stirs our emotions for the better and sometimes, sadly also for the worst as well.

Personally, music moves me. It can make me smile, dance, laugh or even cry.

Today, I want to share a list of songs which mean something to me.

Music Inspires and Heals

To Feel Strong and Brave

This Is Me From the Greatest Showman.

I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it while watching “The Greatest Showman.”

I feel that this song is the essence of the message I want to tell everyone “This IS ME!” Take it or leave it but please, don’t try to change me. I may not be for you but I am for someone and, first and foremost, I am for myself!

Brave by Sara Bareilles

We all want to be fully seen and then to be accepted. But, let’s be real, we don’t fit in everywhere and some will even reject us. This hurts!

Yet, in order to be fully seen, we must be brave even when we know we run the risk of being hurt.

Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield

I love this song for the following lyrics (enough said):

Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten

Try by Colbie Caillat

What isn’t there to like about this song?

As I share my list, I can sense there is a theme running through it. The theme is this: be brave and be you.

This is really the message of my heart. Maybe that’s what my son spoke about when he said I gave them (him and his siblings) confidence. If this is so, then what a compliment and mission accomplished.

I wanted all my kids to know they are loved and they are fine as they are.

No, far from it but they are a work in progress as we all are.

Perfect? Indeed not, but enough so very ENOUGH and WORTHY.

Songs Which Make Me Smile

Sailing by Christoper Cross

This song could have easily been put in the “Reminds Me of my Youth” category. It was my very first cassette tape (yes, cassette), given to me by my brother on Christmas day.

This song always calms me. I love it so much. As a matter of fact, it is my ringtone for hubs now and it never fails to make me smile when I hear it.

Can’t Stop the Feeling by Justin Timberlake

This song makes me want to jiggle and smile. So, just dance, dance, dance…

Careless Whispers by George Michael

It is not that this song is particularly happy, cause it isn’t. It is a song of betrayal.

The reason it makes me smile is that whenever it comes on in the car, the tradition is that we ALL sing it at the top of our lungs and THAT makes me smile.

I’d Really Love to See You Tonight by England Dan and John Ford Coley

This song reminds me of my son Jeremie. He became acquainted with it just before he moved out of state. Since then it makes me think of him. My kids make me smile.

Remind Me of My Youth

I will spare you all the French songs which remind me of my youth.

On a side note, you may notice I am a big sap for love songs.

Carmelia by Dan Hill

This song was on the very first cassette tape I bought in the USA when I first came to attend college in the Fall of 1987. There are a few more well-known songs on this album such as “Can’t We Try” or “I Never Thought” (which I love as well.” However, I really like this one.

Ride Like The Wind by Christopher Cross

Exercise and Dance

Stronger by Kelly Clarkson

This song could have easily belonged in the “brave” category.  It pumps me up and I am a sucker for a good beat. When I was a teen, I wanted to play the drums.

Wouldn’t you know it but my fourth son was a natural at the drums and he was playing at 2½!

What Do You Mean by Justin Bieber

Now, before someone lynches me, I am not a Justin Bieber fan but I am a “beat” fan and I love the beat in this song. It makes me want to dance.

Feel It by Toby Mac

Again, it’s the beat which gets me. indeed, this girl loves to dance.

Love Won’t Let Me Down by Hillsong

The beat….swoon.

Love Songs

How Much I Feel and Biggest Part of Me by Ambrosia

I was able to hear them live recently (it was my September date with hubs). Perfect date:  hubs by my side and sappy love songs which make me feel even mushier than I already do. Sigh.

When God Made You by Natalie Grant

This song puts into words how I feel about hubs. He is the love of my life, no doubts…Not. One.

Love Is Unstoppable by Rascal Flatts

I am a hopeless romantic and I must say it has served me well overall. I do believe in fairy tales and that true love wins.

Worship and Meditation

Your Love Never Fails by Chris McClarney

When I was in the clutches of The Pit, this song was my undoing.

Great I Am by Phillips, Craig, and Dean

This song puts me in the Presence.

Calming Relaxing Music

More Songs

I keep a running list of my favorite songs on YouTube. Some songs I like because hubs likes them and they make me think of him. Others I like because they remind me of my parents, my children or my childhood.

As you can see, other songs I like for the beat…or because, they calm me.

In short, I love many songs for many different reasons. What about you? What genre of music makes you smile or bless you?

Making this list has inspired me to redo my iTunes playlist.
