Books I read in November is part of a feature which is now a tad over a year old and which I first began when I started my Happiness Project—and this blog.

This feature has evolved over the year and went from including solely works of non-fiction to including my entire reading list.

If you too are a book geek and have a great selection to suggest please do so below in the comment section.

Happy reading!

Wild at Heart: Radical Teachings of the Christian Mystics
by Tessa Bielecki

This is not a book per se but rather a narration of what it is like to be a mystic. I really enjoyed the first chapter. Other parts felt too much like a laundry list of things to do which rarely resonates with me. That’s just me though, I have to find my own way and I am not big on “you must do this, then that.”

Tessa is very genuine and personable, and her story is interesting and unusual.

Non-Fiction

Body Kindness: Transform Your Health from the Inside Out–and Never Say Diet Again

I really wanted to love this book because the title is awesome and I personally believe body kindness is not only important, it is necessary if not vital.

We should be far more concerned about making friends with our bodies rather trying to dominate and bend it them to our will like a lion tamer training show animals. Yet, for me, the book was just meh. Not bad, not great.

I think the message of this book is great and the author does give a lot of great suggestions. It just was not the book for me or the book which got me all excited and passionate. Not the fault of the author for sure.

Restoration Thyroid Nutrition Cookbook: Food Strategy for Thyroid Health

by Josh and Jeanne Rubin

I have been on a journey to heal my body and I felt this book would be a nice adjunct to my lengthening list of tips and tricks. Indeed, it is.

The book comes in PDF form. I put it on my Kindle after converting it to Mobi format (the format used by Amazon). However, the book did not convert well which makes it tricky—but not impossible—to read.

Overall, I am pleased with this recipe book. I have only made one recipe so far, the cheesecake, and it was rather yummy. However, I personally found it a bit too sweet.

You can find this book here.

The Jesus Koans Kindle Edition

First, allow me to explain what a koan is. According to Google, a koan is a paradoxical anecdote or riddle, used in Zen Buddhism to demonstrate the inadequacy of logical reasoning and to provoke enlightenment.

In this case of this book, the koans are based on the words of Jesus. I personally did not care for the books as I found it boring. I was expecting riddles which would make me think and ponder. Instead, I felt the riddles were a paraphrase of the Biblical text which did not cause me to ponder anything, nor to think deeper.

However, I readily admit, I am in the minority since 75% of 8—at the time of this writing—Amazon reviews give it a five star.

Shadow of Intrigue (Lantern Beach Romantic Suspense Book 2)

This book has a 100% 4 and 5-star review on Amazon—out of 41 reviews.

I personally really enjoy this author.

My summary: Lisa Garth is the owner of a popular local restaurant on Lantern Beach. During the winter season, she concentrates on creating new—unusual but delicious—recipes.

When she meets Braden Dillinger things don’t go as planned. He is a former Special Forces officer who has come to the island with the hope he can recover from his—invisible but no less real—battle scars. But, he is dangerous? That’s the question Lisa must answer. Her gut says no, but his erratic behaviors seem to say yes.

Will Lisa be able to find the truth—without getting hurt— and will Braden find the truth and the healing he is searching for?

Unintended Witness: Book Two in the Unintended Series

I really enjoyed the first book in this series—Unintended Target.

I was also very excited to read Unintended Witness. It was good but not as good as the first in my opinion. I felt it dragged on at times when the first one was very fast paced. Then again, this is a personal choice since my oldest daughter—and a fellow book geek—did not even read the first book in its entirety as she felt it wasn’t moving fast enough to capture her attention.

Amazon summary: Eight months after her harrowing experiences in Miami, Chloe McConnaughey leaves the comfort of Atlanta and a burgeoning romantic relationship to reunite with the father that abandoned her twenty-five years ago. But when she reaches his quaint southern town she quickly learns that he’s still keeping secrets. Unable to face the mounting tide of lies, she resolves to head back home. But when a murder investigation entangles her father and tragedy strikes, she finds herself partnering with her father’s law associate, who may have more than murder on his mind, to uncover the truth. As Chloe struggles with trying to forgive, and a killer moves closer, they scramble to find answers before the mystery destroys the only family she has left and forces a wedge between Chloe and the man who loves her that is impossible to overcome.

Edge of Peril (Fog Lake Mysteries Book 1)

by Christy Barritt

I was honored to be a beta reading for this book and I really enjoyed it.

It has garnered a 100% 5-star rating—out of 27 reviews—on Amazon.

This book was suspenseful with a touch of creepiness. However, it was not gory.

A small community appears to be the target of a serial killer and Sheriff Luke Walker knows his small force will be stretched too thin. He will need help to catch the murderer. However, when a young woman—and a journalist—shows up in his office stating she knows who the killer is, Luke doesn’t immediately take the bait.

When it appears Harper has become a target, Luke needs to determine if she is telling the truth or just wanting attention—or to write a good story.

Storm of Doubt (Lantern Beach Romantic Suspense Book 3)

Another book by Christy Barritt who is a prolific writer—to my utter delight.

This novella fits nicely in the cozy mystery category.

When pastor Jack Wilder comes upon a crime—a woman being stabbed—he not only finds her help in time, but also wants to protect her from any future harm. It appears her stalker as not only followed her to the remote island but has turned dangerous.

The thing is, pastor Jake feels like a fake. Since the death of his wife four years prior, he asked questioned God’s existence. Can he find both the stalker and his faith?
